TCNewTech Pitch Contest June 2020

CAPNOS, a company with a mission to prevent lung disease and save lives with a safe alternative to vaping, won the TCNewTech Pitch contest on Tuesday night, held during an online-only event which aired on the TCNewTech YouTube Channel and Facebook Page to an international audience. CEO & Founder, Brendan Wang beat out two other entrepreneurs in a very close competition. In the end, CAPNOS took home the $500 cash prize, which was sponsored by RJG, Inc in Traverse City, Michigan.

The competition showcased three emerging startups; one from healthcare, one from the retail sector, and CAPNOS, a unique solution to vaping addiction. In addition to CAPNOS, pitches were given by SpellBound, a patented, augmented reality technology designed to reduce a patient’s pain perception and LOCUS, an online shopping platform that offers local brick-and-mortar stores a competitive advantage. Spellbound had just received a 1.8 million dollar grant from the National Institute of Health the day before the event in order to continue researching ways their product may reduce opioid use. Although all three startups are at various stages of launch, the one thing they all share in common is the need for funding. The event was Live Streamed and can be viewed on YouTube and Facebook.

Each of the competitors had five minutes to pitch their startup to the online-only audience followed by five minutes of questions submitted by the live stream audience. While the audience considered each of the three presentations and voted via text message, Emcee and founding member Lisa Baker-Lorincz shared a little on the history of TCNewTech — celebrating five years of hosting monthly pitch events for startups.

TCNewTech brings together innovative ideas with investors during monthly pitch contests typically held at the City Opera House in downtown Traverse City. TCNewTech sponsors include Michigan Broadband Services, Susan Soffredine Rauser with State Farm Insurance, SCORE, Northern Michigan Angels, and Blake Bernard with Homewaters Real Estate.
